Alzheimer’s Research: New Compound Developed in Our Laboratory Shows Promising Results
Our team, led by Prof. Maria José Diógenes, has developed an innovative molecule capable of protecting key brain mechanisms involved in memory and learning, opening new possibilities for therapeutic strategies in Alzheimer’s disease. This work was recently highlighted in an interview with Expresso, where our PI presented the main advances of the project.
The compound has been tested in cultured neurons, human brain tissue, and animal models, showing consistent and encouraging results:
Prevention of cognitive decline in animal models of the disease.
Protection of receptors involved in memory, preserving natural neuroprotective mechanisms.
Unexpected reduction of toxic protein accumulation associated with Alzheimer’s pathology.
This approach represents a promising step forward by targeting not only symptoms but also the underlying mechanisms driving neurodegeneration. The project is now moving into further validation and pre-clinical development.
